spirit week costumes 10/5/15
It's Spirit Week here at Smithsburg High. If you wore a costume on Monday that has something to do with literature or a book, send me the picture and I'll add it here!
September 27-Oct. 3, 2015 is banned books week
Banned Books Week is an annual event celebrating the freedom to read. Show your support for the freedom to seek and to express ideas, even those some consider unorthodox or unpopular.
Ms. Caudell, along with some other county LMS folk, are challenging both students and staff to get “caught” reading a banned book! Take a “Shelfie” (a selfie with your book!) and post it to your favorite social media (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter) with the hashtags #wcpsshelfie, #bannedbooks, and #smhshelfie! Below are a couple sample images to get you started. Wondering about banned or challenged books? Check out this link for more info: http://www.ala.org/bbooks/about |

September is library card month
September is Library Card Sign-up Month. If you don't already have a library card for the Washington County Free Library (WCFL), why not get one now? Just click here to open a copy of the request form. Fill it out and give it back to Mrs. Caudell by the end of the month. She'll see that the public library gets your form and they'll send a card for you. If you don't want to wait on a card, you can fill out the form and take it to the library on your own and get it faster!
TEEN READ WEEK 2015
On October 19-22 this year, we'll celebrate Teen Read Week, and this year's theme is "Get away @ Your Library". Watch for information about what will happen each day!
TEEN READ WEEK 2014
Last year, for Teen Read Week, the SHS Library hosted a week of activities for its students. The national 2014 theme was "Turn Dreams into Reality @Your Library". Here is what took place.
Monday we put up the Smithsburg Reads Poster--Check out what we're reading!
(Additionally, 47 students participated in a personal book exchange).
Tuesday the Poster entries were due.
(The goal: illustrate a quote that deals with Dreams or Reality or both.)
First place went to Owen Schupp--CONTRATS OWEN!
(I laminated the poster to preserve it. It looks better in person. Stop by and see!)

Check out this poster by Jane Sagoe. I read. A lot.
And I had never seen this quote before. It literally gave me chills when I first read it. It is now officially my favorite quote of maybe ever.

And this poster was createad by Reyana Kaji--the watercolor art is beautiful!
On Wednesday the essay entries were due.
(The goal: in no more than 250 words, explain "What kind of people are happier--dreamers or realists?") Try to say anything meaningful in 250 words--it's hard!!
CONGRATS TO WINNER TALIA SEIDMAN. Her essay follows.
On Thursday, we had an Acoustic Guitar Reading Cafe
Teachers had a chance to sign up to bring their classes to the Media Center to read for 1/2 hour, drink a cup of coffee, and listen to some live acoustic music. Our own Trevor Musser and Mr. McNairn played all day. Mr. Price even jumped in period 3. A big thanks to G.T.'s HandiMart in Cascade for lending out the big thermoses which made having massive quantities of coffee possible.
