The last books that Caudell read and liked
All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr Set in the midst of WWII in Paris and Germany, this book covers two young people thrown into chaos. Marie-Laure lives in Paris with her father until they have to escape...and she is abandoned...and she is blind. Werner lives in Germany, is brilliant, and because of his mad skills winds up in Hitler Youth. The two find a way to each other. It's sad and lovely.
It was voted one of the 10 best books by the 2014 New York Times Book Review and was a National Book Award finalist. It's in the school library (FIC DOE). - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Yes Please by Amy Poehler This is a fun memoir. I found the SNL alum to be smarter than I expected. I already expected her to be funny and she didn't disappoint there. The writing is easy to follow and the book is a fast read.
It has been #1 on the New York Times bestseller list. It's in the school library (921 POE). - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Orphan Train by Christina Baker Kline As children were left orphaned in big east coast cities in the early part of the 1900s, they were often send on trains out west with the hope they'd be adopted. Orphan Train chronicles the story of two females: Molly, a 17 year old in foster care in 2011 who is in trouble with the law and has had a dreadful life...and a much older wealthy woman who Molly learns lived her own nightmare as a child and young adult in the 20's and 30's. The book is a fast read and I enjoyed the primary characters.
It was a #1 New York Times bestseller and The New Maine Times Book Review called it "One of the most intriguing, tender novels of 2013." This one is not in library yet, but it is ordered.
